Designer Spinoff

A recent trend surfacing the fashion industry are spinoff tees of major designers including Céline, Givenchy, Hermès, and Comme des Garçons - Models like Cara DeLevingne and Jourdan Dunn have have been spotted wearing their Homiés beanies off the runway by Brian Lichtenberg, and SSUR's tee "Comme des Fuck Down" has been quite prominent as well. Whether they are paying homage to the giant fashion houses or not, designers are pushing the boundaries with more than just a play on words.

Dying to get your hands on them? Montreal's Editorial Boutique is selling beanies and sweatshirts by Brian Lichtenberg. Find them on 1455 Rue Stanley.

Crazy About Cara

Taking the fashion world by storm, Cara Delevingne is more than just an ordinary model of the moment. A prominent face in this year's New York, Paris, and London Fashion Week, it wasn't her bold eyebrows and sharp features but her quirky and crazy personality that won me over.

Cara's instagram (@CaraDelevingne) is full of her onesies, beanies, and funny faces. She's real and seems like somebody I would want to be friends with. Her interviews are hilarious, such a fresh veer away from the typical model-posh personality. She's friends with Rita Ora, whom she fondly calls "wifey" (how can we not love her for that), and has twitter interactions with Miley Cyrus as well (another dynamic duo?).

Her debut British Vogue cover came out on newstands in the UK in late February, while I've been waiting patiently for mine to come in Montreal. Everyone wants a piece of Cara, and who can blame them?

She's the new face of Burberry Body Tender, the campaign which can be seen here:

Christopher Bailey, Burberry Chief Creative Officer discusses Cara and Burberry Body: "Burberry Body was always about creating something that captures all the different characteristics of the Burberry girl. With Body Tender, we wanted to explore and bring out the softer, more playful sides of her — capturing this light femininity in the scent as well as the campaign. Cara’s natural beauty and vibrant energy lit up alongside London’s magnificent architecture."

This girl is blowing up the world of fashion.

The only question that rises from my mind is, why did she choose to be a VS Angel? I think she's much too high fashion for that. Thoughts?

Montreal Fashion Week - Martin Lim

As a fashion-obsessed freshman at McGill, it was only natural for me to pounce on the opportunity to score a ticket to this year’s Montreal Fashion Week. Upon browsing the website, I was ecstatic to find that not all of their shows were exclusive, and that some were available for general admission. As if this wasn’t fabulous enough, the ticket price wasn’t through the roof either – shows varied from fifteen to twenty five dollars depending on the designer, plus taxes and fees. The lineup of designers was mostly unheard of, but Martin Lim’s collection preview caught my eye. Having always wanted to attend a fashion week, the fashionista within me squealed with joy upon the processing of my ticket to his show on the second evening.

The night was approaching, and I decided to go casual-chic with a drapey silk-cashmere top with leather leggings and black suede heels. Grabbing my Marc by Marc Jacobs bag, I hurried out to catch the taxi I ordered – there’s no such thing as being fashionably late at a runway show! The venue was at Montreal’s Arsenal, a converted shipyard built in 1846 that now showcases contemporary art. Walking into Arsenal whisked me away from the cold, unwelcoming Montreal winter to a world of fashion and glamour – pieces of art adorned the walls, chic furniture filled the room, and impeccably dressed guests chatted along an open-concept bar at the back of the venue. Martin Lim’s show was to be held in the Main Hall, and the queue for the much-anticipated collection began buzzing with excitement.

Having a ticket that was general admission, I was lucky to score a seat in the third row. Electronic, trance-like music opened the runway show, and soon models filled the stage, at first two by two, later on one by one. The collection began with a flourish of eclectic pieces along with a foreshadowing of the fringe fest to come: fringe, as well as silk cords and flaps, adorned countless pieces in cool, refined shades from grey-mauve to vivid cerulean. In footwear, each model sported the same chunky wedge wrapped in grey fabric, providing a factor of consistency among the wide and creative range of clothing.

The minimalism of the clothing stood in stark opposition against the delicately styled hair and barely-there makeup of the models. As a finishing touch of femininity, Martin Lim’s signature free-flowing layered evening dresses appeared near the end of the show, showcasing the great attention of detail in the designers’ work. A personal favourite piece of mine was a high-low evening dress comprised of black and cerulean silk chiffon with a low back tastefully cut in a V.

Martin Lim’s Fall 2013 show comprised of a modernist, chic rendition of style. Lim refers to the fringe as how we perceive time, mentioning the flapper fashion trend that has been bordering the attention of many designers for a few seasons. The ambiance of the show was one to remember, an image of a smoky runway bathed in a wide array of cool colours persisting in the minds of its audience. Their promising work keeps the fashion crowds waiting for his next collection – what will Martin Lim offer for Spring/Summer 2014? Here’s to another queue of anticipation and excitement for the coming season.

10 Must-haves to Complete Your Winter Wardrobe

As the temperatures plummet  heading into winter, the number of outfit options begins to soar.  Colder temperatures call for a flurry of sweaters, parkas, and scarves. With so many choices, how do you go from simply ‘ready for winter’ to completely ‘wintachic?’ Never fear, the Tribune is here to help.

The chunky knit scarf:
Whether it’s a plain wrap-around or an infinity, a scarf is not only a chic accessory, but a necessity. Choose a chunky knit scarf to lend structure to your getup, or add texture to your parka. Use neutral colours to complement, and brighter colours for a pop. If you want optimum warmth, go for a blend that’s over 40 per cent wool.

Keep those ears warm:
Protect your ears from the harsh Montreal cold with a stylish winter headband or a pair of earmuffs. You can find a wide array of choices throughout the city, in stores like Little Burgundy, H&M, and Zara. We love a headband adorned with a bow to the side, or faux fur earmuffs that make a statement. Très belle!

The oversized coat:
For coats, big is beautiful this season. Own the streets with an androgynous, double breasted coat, or go feminine with a flowy, gown-esque choice. Topshop is a great haven for oversized coats, so head over to the Bay on Ste. Catherine’s to have a look at their selection. With chunky knit tights and black boots underneath, even visiting Parisians will envy your style.

A velvet love affair:
Velvet was a huge hit on the runways this season. Start your velvet experience off right with a simple pair of black or burgundy skinny pants and you’ll set your tights apart from the typical plain legging. Match with a polished top, and you’re ready for class—both kinds.

Perfect plaids:
Winter is never complete without a healthy dose of plaid. Take your red, black, and white plaid out of the log cabin and onto the street for a festive feel.  Dress it down with a boyfriend-fit button up shirt over a white tank and leggings for a comfy-chic way to relax on a lazy Sunday!

The sneaker wedge:
Athletic meets fashionable in this latest fashion innovation. The sneaker wedge offers the versatility of a sneaker with the stylish flair of a wedge. This glammed-up version looks fabulous with navy skinny-jeans and a warm biker jacket. Our favourite? Jeffrey Campbell’s black sneaker wedge—the patent accents are to die for.

Haute in houndstooth:
Always classy, houndstooth is inarguably one of the most fashion-forward patterns this winter. Channel your inner Coco Chanel or Alexander McQueen with a sweater, scarf, or purse, and incorporate a touch of houndstooth into your outfit for an extra dash of drama.

Fair Isle sweaters:
Despite perks like fresh snow, Starbucks specialty drinks, and vacation time, what we love most about the holiday season are definitely Fair Isle sweaters. The knits, the patterns, the textures… what’s not to adore? A baggy sweater ensemble with tight leggings is a sure-fire way to cozy up to winter and show off your holiday spirit.

The faux fur vest:
Take a bold risk and invest in a faux fur vest for your winter wardrobe. They look great with any dark, solid-colour top and a pair of jeans for bottoms. Accessorize with a long-chained silver necklace as a finishing touch. Club Monaco’s fur vest this season is catching our eye, as well as ones from Urban Outfitters and H&M, so head down to the shopping district if you want to investigate this trend.

Thigh high socks:

Shy away from the typical leggings-jeggings-jeans getup this season and try something a little different. Black tights with thigh high socks are a very fashion-forward spinoff to the typical bottom. Go subtle with muted shades, or go bold with louder colours to add some flavour to your outfit. Wear them underneath a dark skater dress, and you’ll be sure to turn heads!

Drama for Louboutin

Christian Louboutin is suing Yves Saint Laurent for their use of red soles. This comes without surprise - everyone knows red soles belong to Louboutin and Louboutin only!

The company trademarked the red sole in 2008 and has reportedly asked YSL to refrain from using their signature colour.

This doesn't come as a surprise - in 2007 the label sued Oh Deer! for their use of the red soles.

Topshop in Canada!

Today might just be the best day of my life. Okay, a bit of an overstated fact, but a fact nonetheless. TOPSHOP, my all time favourite British fashion store, has been confirmed to hit Toronto. It’s been confirmed that Hudson’s Bay Company has bought the rights to open Topshop, and they’re planning to launch 50 stores in Canada, starting with Toronto! The joys of living in the best city in the country;)

London Fashion Week

Paul Smith, Burberry Prorsum and Matthew Wiliamson were definitely my faves of London Fashion Week.
I love the boy-meets-girl minimalist style that is carried out effortlessly by Paul Smith, the classic Burberry Prorsum (although this season, they’ve traded their signature double breasted buttons for toggles) and Matthew Williamson, playing with beautiful hues of bluish gray.

My Fashion Piece (ENG 4U1)

Apologies for the lack of posting, I have been SO swamped with schoolwork.
I was assigned a package of essays to be completed on Friday, and of course, I left them all for Thursday night. Quite disastrous, and I will NEVER put myself through that again. However, I’d like to share my best piece of work with you, (out of the four, that is). Enjoy!
The Ins and Outs of 2011
Tight jeans and leggings are all the rage this year. For men with a brave and daring fashion sense, skinny jeans will do. The rendezvous with the past year’s ultra tight, derriere flaunting yoga pants is quite out.
Chunky, fairisle sweaters from your grandmother’s closet are very in. So are retro band tees and crop tops that showcase your (preferably toned) midriff. Throw away all the t-shirts you own screaming ABERCROMBIE or HOLLISTER!
Vintage crossover bags sporting distressed leather are very in. So are Longchamp bags (we’ve finally caught on to European fashion, although they may now consider it passé). Handbags adorned with logos and anything else overly showy is out, so you can bury those at the back of your closet. V-necks and Pashmina scarves are also out. Accessorizing to your heart’s content is back – rings and bracelets, whether sterling silver or stringed, oversize or delicate, are very in.
Long hair is still in, but kiss goodbye to side bangs and side parts, and say hello to the middle part – but only if you can pull it off. Lip stain is the new lipstick, and it’s time to look fresh-faced, not washed out. Bring in everything dark, especially in nail polish: plums, mahoganies and blacks are all the craze.
Everything organic is the latest fashion in food, so run to Whole Foods and embrace your inner tree hugger. Multi-grain, whole wheat and natural is what you must have this season. Bid adieu to the high-fructose, ultra saturated danger foods of the future!
Crazy outfits and crazier music videos are in among the celebrities. Hello, Lady Gaga’s unforgettable outfits (Alexander McQueen heels, anyone?) and Ke$ha’s metallic eyebrows. Gone are the low key outfits and subtle music videos. Britney’s back (or at least, she’s trying to be), but don’t hold it against her. Anything avant-garde is a winner – think Salvadore Dali meets Marc by Marc Jacobs. In the cinemas, 3D movies are all the rage. So are 3D televisions, should you wish to indulge in this craze at home.
Having an iPod is standard already, but do you have the iPad? PlayStation3 and Call of Duty are very in among the boys, while teen dramas Pretty Little Liars and Gossip Girl are in for the girls. Think BlackBerrys are only for businessmen? Think again. These smartphones now belong to thousands of teenagers who worship Blackberry Messenger: instant text messaging at rocket speed.
Facebook is overrated! It’s time to get a blog, so join the Tumblr bandwagon – especially if you have artsy photos to showcase.
Yes, artsy is in – but not as in as attending an arts school.
